Series: Book 25 China Bayles Mysteries
 Author: Susan Wittig Albert
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime

Max Mantel, the killer McQuaid put away years ago, has busted out of Huntsville Prison and appears to be headed for Pecan Springs. McQuaid knows there’s only one way to stop the vengeful convict—set a trap with himself as bait.

China wants to stay by her husband’s side and keep him from harm. But McQuaid  insists that she get out of town and go to the Last Chance Olive Ranch, where she’s agreed to teach a workshop on herbs.

When China and her best friend arrive at the ranch, she learns the owner, Maddie Haskell, has her own troubles. She inherited the ranch and olive oil business from the late matriarch, Eliza Butler, but Eliza’s nephew is contesting the will.

While China throws herself into helping Maddie, McQuaid’s plan backfires when Mantel executes a countermove he never saw coming. Now McQuaid’s life is not the only one at stake—and this time may really be his last chance...

Marlene's Review

China and Ruby don't disappoint. China although always reluctant to use her education and skills always saves the day. I truly understand why China is reluctant to leave that knowledge and the memories of what it was used for and settle for a life more positive and enjoyable. Ruby on the other hand is up to her old habits but this time it may end up different.

There was more focus on McQuaid, China's husband, in this story then I head read previously, I enjoyed that a great deal. His story line was quite action packed. I liked how a horrific case from his past was brought to the present and how it was dealt with. While China's was more drama and tugged at your heart strings for the character's involved.

On a whole the two story lines kept a good pace and had you rooting for the main characters to come out on top. It was a great predator/prey story.

Reuniting with my old friends Mel, Tate and Angie I knew I would be in for a fun, entertaining read filled with Mel's wild shenanagigans to solve a murder and much to my surprise Angie's bridezilla moments.

Over the top and wacky characters and the cupcakes don't hurt either.Author Jenn McKinlay manages to come up with a way out there setting for a murder that had me laughing out loud and she also managed to tug at my heart strings with some crazy characters along the way.

Caramel Crush was filled with romance of a magical and left me very emotional. The murderer had it coming and the surprising twist at the end that made my heart sink made me dying to read the next book in the series,Wedding Cake Crumble.

The Ghost of Cafe Past by Gayle Leeson (author of Silence of The Jams)

(Silence of The Jams is Gayle Leeson's New Release in A Down South Cafe Mysteries)

I’m not so sure that The Ghost of Café Past is the best title for this post, but it rolls off the tongue a little better than The Ghost of Lunch Counter Past. But please bear with me. When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to take me to Clark’s Drugstore. To me, it was one of the most exciting places ever. (She also took me to the post office where she’d let me turn the tiny knob right and left to the corresponding numbers and then take her mail out of the narrow slot.

Grandmother knew all the happening places to take a seven-year-old.) Clark’s Drugstore was a magical place—part pharmacy, part general store, part diner. It had glossy magazines, greeting cards, candies, toiletries, makeup, pantyhose, over-the-counter and prescription medications. In addition, there was a lunch counter along the wall to the left of the store.

Along the counter, there were orange stools where a little girl could sit and spin until she was dizzy. And no one would tell her to stop. It seemed to me that the same woman always took our order at the lunch counter. I can’t remember her name, but I know she had gray hair—big gray hair. She was warm, friendly, and always smiling. She served up the best cheeseburgers and French fries.

I’d get my cheeseburger with mustard, mayonnaise, and pickle, and that flavor combination always takes me back to sitting beside Grandmother in that small-town drugstore that was part of a strip mall on Main Street. There were some strange characters who also frequented the drug store. Some seemed harmless. Some not so much.

One man would try to touch me when I strayed too far from the safety of Grandmother’s side. I was terrified of that man and can still remember what he looked like. Fortunately, most of the characters who hung out in that Main Street strip mall were harmless. There was the man who walked the streets either whistling or singing, had a friendly nod for everyone, and who poured his coffee into a saucer to let it cool before slurping it up. And there was the guy everyone thought was “a little off” because he walked around all the time holding a transistor radio up to his ear.

Looking back, maybe he was just a trail-blazer. How many people do you see walking around these days without an iPod or phone up to their ear? In Silence of the Jams, the Down South Café exemplifies that small-town feeling. The café is in a rural part of town. There aren’t a lot of businesses nearby.

And there are several eccentric characters who patronize the café. The owner/operator, Amy Flowers, tries to incorporate the best of the old with the new. She continues to serve her customers their favorite comfort foods while encouraging them to step beyond the tried and true and to expand their palates.

While there aren’t any café regulars portrayed by the creepy man from my childhood, there are villains. In Silence of the Jams, Amy realizes life isn’t as idyllic as it seems when a man is murdered in her café. Now she must try to determine which of the new people who’ve come into her life are trustworthy and which one is a killer.

Includes delicious recipes!"

Tina's Review

I knew I was in for a delicious mystery with A Frying Shame. Reading about Talia in her Eatery, Fry me a Sliver, cooking up delicious fish and other delectable entries with her friends made me want to be there and be her friend too, it made it a fun mystery.

A fast-paced mystery cleverly plotted and written. My favorite foodie mysteries are ones with cooking competitions. Talia's Deep Fried apple pies was a perfect fit for the cook-off/bake-off.

Maybe I'm a little biased when it comes to foodie mysteries but it's for good reason. Author Linda Reilly writes about food and mystery with perfection.

When Indigo Tea Shop owner Theodosia Browning is invited by Doreen Briggs, one of Charleston's most prominent hostesses, to a -Rat Tea, - she is understandably intrigued. As servers dressed in rodent costumes and wearing white gloves offer elegant finger sandwiches and fine teas, Theo learns these parties date back to early twentieth-century Charleston, where the cream of society would sponsor so-called rat to promote city rodent control and better public health.
But this party goes from odd to chaotic when a fire starts at one of the tables and Doreen's entrepreneur husband suddenly goes into convulsions and drops dead. Has his favorite orange pekoe tea been poisoned? Theo smells a rat.
The distraught Doreen soon engages Theo to pursue a discreet inquiry into who might have murdered her husband. As Theo and her tea sommelier review the guest list for suspects, they soon find themselves drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse...
INCLUDES RECIPES AND TEA TIME TIPS

Tina's Review

The history of  the "rat tea" was fasinating but left me a little squimish as the servers at the tea that Theodosia and Drayton attended were dressed as rats. I was not fond of the way Theodosia was protrayed in the beginning of the book with her perfectly waxed eye brows, it made her seem like a unrelatable character.

She redeems herself quite nicely along with the employees of the Indigo Tea Shop, Drayton, the tea sommenier  and Hailey the chef and when she teams up with Drayton to solve the murder of Beau Briggs.

Revenge, intrigue along with a unique method of the murder. Charleston's high society characters that you come to expect from Laura Child's Tea Shop Mysteries and the tea time and delicious tea time fare.

Review/Giveaway: Gone with the Twins by Kylie Logan

 Title: Gone with the Twins
Series: Book 5 League of Literary Ladies
 Author: Kylie Logan
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
 Format: Paperback
Source: Received for review from Publisher
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
 Reviewed by: Marlene

Synopsis From Goodreads.com

The League of Literary Ladies is currently enjoying Margaret Mitchell's saga of the South, Gone with the Wind. But there's one situation on South Bass Island that they wish would simply blow over. Kidnapped as teenagers, the children of a famous movie star are now media darlings after a miraculous escape. What's next for the celebrity twins? They're opening an over-the-top B and B called Tara on South Bass Island, and frankly, they don't give a damn about the competition--including Bea Cartwright's own beloved inn. The other members of the League--Chandra, Kate, and Luella--are turning scarlet. But when local realtor Vivian Frisk is found murdered, and the suspects include Chandra, who lost her beau to the frisky Vivian, the Ladies rally to her defense. They may have to skim a few chapters of the Civil War soap opera and focus on bringing justice to the island they call home...

Marlene's Review

The story certainly was engaging, the description of the island and architecture of the buildings are wonderful. I love how the author has a group of strong willed women interweaving themselves throughout the book and supporting the main character Bea. It was delightful read about fame, murder, deceit and perserverance.

As for the characters they are certainly entertaining. Bea with her secrets and her imagination. Chandra, I call her the wold one, she certainly was a good supporting lead in this chapter of the series.

She fueled Bea's desire to solve the murder even with her opposing behavior. Kate and Luella are great foundation roles for bea's friendship. I love the doddling sherriff as well. And there is Levi, the rocky love interest. What can I say he sounds perfect on paper.

My Review

Silence of The Flans has a unique premise any foodie with a insashable sweet tooh won't be able to put down. The dessert ambulance and Winnie, the ameture  sleuth "rescuing" customers with life's problems with delicious desserts she bakes.

There's Winnie's charming elderly friends besides some insufferable characters. A precious love/hate relationship with her cat,Lovey who likes to tag along on Dessert Squad Deliveries. It was a interesting and heartwarming plot and a sweet romance or should I say romances

The Dessert names with the puns were fun and Winnie baking were my favorite parts of the story. Winnie proved to be a very determined character and what I love about most was her fighting for her dream and it came with a very flavourfull and delicious ending.

Synopsis From Goodreads.Com

Sydney McCall left behind an ex-fiancé and a New York advertising job to return home to Deer Park, North Carolina and help her sister, Kat, run the local animal shelter, Friendly Paws. Determined to save the shelter from financial trouble, Sydney and Kat organize a cat café fundraising event at a local coffee shop. Things are looking up until their landlord, Trowbridge Littleton, threatens to shut down the event. When Sydney drops by his art gallery to make peace, she finds Kat--along with Littleton's dead body.

Local homicide detective Will Worthington--who just happens to be Sydney's old high school crush--is highly suspicious of the sisters' involvement. Desperate to clear their names from the suspect list, Sydney pounces on the investigation. With the help of one of the shelter cats, a savvy orange tabby named Toby, Sydney begins poking her nose into other local businesses whose owners may have benefited from Littleton's death--until the killer notices she's pawing a little too closely at the truth.

Tina's Review

Purr M for Murder was heartwarming, suspenseful and the best part was the cats. I would have loved to have rescued them all myself.
The most heartwarming for me was a orange tabby named  Toby, a rescue cat searching for the perfect human to make his
Life complete, How he basically shunned everyone that tried to get close to him to adopt him until he met Sydney who along with her sister Kat, runs the animal shelter and they together catch a killer of their landlord who wants to put the shelter down for good.

Sisters, friends a hunky detective from Sydney’s Past  and Toby and the shelter made this a real enjoyable read. Very likable characters and would love to have been friends with Sydney and Kat and to be a character working in the shelter along with them and it was actually how this story made me feel like I was right there along with them, a part of the mystery, that’s the best thing about reading a cozy mystery . I could tell that the author T.C. LoTempio really loves cats but you don’t have to be a cat person to enjoy this mystery. Purr M for Murder really had me questioning who the killer was. I mystery I couldn’t put down.

Book Review/Giveaway: I See You by Clare Mackintosh

SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS.COM:

You do the same thing every day. You know exactly where you're going. You're not alone. When Zoe Walker sees her photo in the classifieds section of a London newspaper, she is determined to find out why it's there. There's no explanation: just a website, a grainy image and a phone number. She takes it home to her family, who are convinced it's just someone who looks like Zoe. But the next day the advert shows a photo of a different woman, and another the day after that. Is it a mistake? A coincidence? Or is someone keeping track of every move they make . . .

TINA'S REVIEW:

I normally don't like books written with multiple perspectives, I See You was the exception to that rule for me. Zoe is a relatable mom and wife to me and Kelly Swift the police officer is the only one who believes in her.

The way the author described the London, England setting brought to life the majesty and at the same time the reality of a crime ridden city.Zoe is haunted and scared when her picture is found in an advertizement  in the local paper, with a pick pocket and a murder of two more women in this strange advertizement for findtheone.com.

Claire Mackintosh's writing is suspenseful and at the same time exciting. The plot was entertaining and had me on the edge of my seat.
