 Trick or Treat......

During the holiday season at the most important time of the year, no not Christmas but Halloween Proper City, Nevada pulls out all the stops with town-wide festivities. It is also the busiest time for new owner of Disguise DeLImit Costume shop, Margo Tamblyn to be taken away from her work.

While she is busy taking care of her customers and making costumes for the annual Halloween Party held at the Alexandria Hotel, unknowingly to her she has been legally duped out of the festivities on part to an oversight on her and her staff's behalf. While trying to rectify this situation before her father becomes aware she may have ruined the family ran business, she will come up against some of the hardest decisions she has ever had to make.

However, Margo intends to make good with her customers and even though she isn't fully aware she has been ostracized from the event she goes anyway. By the end of the night she will have regretted that decision when she is found standing next to a dead body. The man murdered none other than Paul Haverford, a developer that has targeted Proper City to evolve from its quaintness to a mini Las Vegas. With some of the city council and businesses on board this new path for the city has made a rift in between fellow citizens and business owners.

When Margo feels she has become the sole suspect for this crime, being investigated by her secret suitor's ex-girlfriend she sets her sights on revealing the truth and proving her innocence. Along the way she must battle the affections of two men, come to terms with her father moving on from his life professionally and romantically from her mother, and juggling the ever revolving suspects that come into her preview while running the store during the busiest week of the year might do her in.

But with the help of her friend Bobbie, her therapist Willow and her cat Soot she will find her way. Although her way will be into the hands of the killer himself.

The story was thoroughly enjoyable, Margo keeps the story constantly going with her stubbornness not to back down. Which I admire in a lead character. It was a fun read, did it in one day. I chose it because the story represents and celebrates my favorite holiday. Margo is quite an eccentric character as well but although she doubts herself she also knows herself. She is also supported by a group of strong characters, some that stand out are Ebony, Tak, Francine and Kirby her sidekick, I mean employee.

 Happy Halloween!!!

Book Review

Paranormal mysteries are just not my bag. But... I'm not just a fan of the A Wishcrafter Mysteries I love every single one I have read.  Wishcrafter and witch, Darcy Merriweather is moving house from her Aunt Ve's and home of "As You Wish" their personal concierge business.

Darcy, Aunt Ve are wishcrafters and live in an Enchanted Village in Salem,Massachuetts who grant wishes and live  among the mortals. Waiting for police chief, Nick Sawyer to propose to Darcy is more than Darcy and the village can bear but she is hoping he will soon.

While cleaning out Aunt Ve's garage of Darcy's belongings to move Darcy, Aunt Ve and Darcy's sister, Harper happen upon the skeletal remains of one of Aunt Ve's ex-husband's proven to be Mike Babbage. Known by Aunt Ve as a weasel,a wonderer also a haunted and tortured man but a man who was alluring to women but even his death remains a mystery.

Darcy is a craft investigator who investigates criminal cases involving magic and this one hits close to home when Aunt Ve becomes a suspect. Soon layers unravel and Miles has been romancing many witches in the Village. Suspects may be among them or someone with many secrets to hide.

A very character driven mystery, and I love them all. Thats why I love this series so much. I forget they are witches but Darcy being a witch granting wishes is not a bad thing. Excentric characters like Archie the mascaw bird and Pepe and Mrs P are mice and delightful and bring a sense of whimsy and comedic relief to The Witch and the Dead. Tears filled my eyes at the end. Gripping drama that had me turning pages I can't wait to read and review the next in the series.

Book Review/Giveaway: Crepe Factor by Laura Childs With Terrie Farley Moran

Series: Book 14 A Scrapbooking Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime Mysteries
 Format:Hardcover

Book Review

The reason I picked up this book was because it had a foodie plot, that I thought would be a fun read. It was more than fun, the writing was hilarous, from the first chapter and I knew I would enjoy Crepe Factor.

Carmela Bertrand runs Memory Mine, A Scrapbooking Shop and her best friend, Ava are quite the pair, they so remind me of Tricia and Angelica from Lorna Barrett's Booktown mysteries, I loved them. The Winter Market has come to the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Among the vendors at the Market there were food vendors. Martin Lash writes on a food website called "Glutton for Punishment" Carmela and Ava among the crowd as they observe him gasping for air and lurching wildly with a huge serving fork protruding from him when he landed on the pavement heading for them, Splat !!!

Quigg is a restauranteur who once dated Carmela  got into a arguement with Lash moments before his death and he instantly becomes a suspect when Detective Babcock who is currently dating Carmella is clearly jealous and wants to lock him up and throw away the key but when Quigg asks Carmella for help to investigate she can't say now and with another murder Carmella may need Babcocks help after all.

Comical Characters made me a instant fan of the Scrapbooking Mysteries. I loved the drama between Babcock, Quigg and Carmella. Carmella was a relateable character and so reminded me of what I would do if I were in her romantic situation. I will surely be reading another book in this fast pased murder mystery.

Book Review/Giveaway: Tangled up in Brew by Joyce Tremel

Title: Tangled up in Brew
 Author: Joyce Tremel
Series: Book 2 A Brewing Trouble Mysteries
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime Mysteries
 Format:Paperback
Source: Received for review from Publisher
 Rating: 5 stars

There is trouble brewing Tangled up in Brew. The Three Rivers Brew festival is coming to Pittsburg, there are prizes for the best beer and the best burgers. Max O’Hara is the proprietor of Allegheny Brew House and she is entering along with her chef boyfriend, Jake who is entering with a secret burger recipe that Max is dying to get out of him. The prize is a golden stein and one thousand dollars.

There’s great comradery among the brewers all except one brewer, Dwayne. Max and Jake try not to let that bring them down. Reginald Mobley is a food and beverage critic who is known for giving bad reviews and driving restaurants out of business and it’s no surprise when Max’s Brew and Jakes Burger leaves a bad taste in his mouth, so bad the food critic keels over and dies.

Jake is soon accused of murder and with Max’s dad being a detective and his partner set on locking Jake up and throwing away the key Max needs to brew up something fast to get Jake out of this predicament.

Foodie competitions in mysteries I love them, it reminds me of watching reality t.v. Tangled up in Brew is less filling, reads great. It will make you in the mood for a cold one. Max and Jake made a great couple combined with a page-turning plot and a villian you couldnt wait to die. I loved the beer premise of A Brewing Trouble Series. I think men as well as women can enjoy.

Book Reviews/Giveaway : The Hammett Hex by Victoria Abbott

Marlene's Review
After successfully negotiating herself a working vacation from her dominating employer Jordan is finally spending a week away in San Francisco. Vera's catch she must return with the rare signed first addition of Red Harvest. But she isn't alone, Officer Tyler "Smiley" Dekker is her travelling companion. Both are choosing to use this vacation to explore their turbulent relationship and focus on all the famous literary haunts San Francisco has to offer. And of course to indulge in Jordan's vintage shopping habit.

Once they arrive things seem to go haywire, from Tyler confessing part of the trip is to reconnect with his estranged grandmother to Jordan having to use unusual means to acquire the book. They will be chased, stalked, plundered and trapped. With to many pieces to the puzzle Jordan finds herself with to many suspects and not enough to go on but in an instance it is all set straight in her head and then the real work begins, providing the proof.

Along with San Francisco's hilly backdrop their relationship takes a detour as well. With Jordan being dragged along in the wake of one little white lie. A lie that will make her question her future.

It was a fun story with all the different intertwining story lines. Jordan was at her best. Loved the new character's introduced as well. I really enjoy reading stories with strong female leads, especially ones with attitude.

Tina's Review

Disappearing book shops, murdered owners, break and entering of a senior’s home and hotel rampages in the heart of San Francisco are what awaited me when I read The Hemmett Hex. Jordan Bingham has a couchey job working for Vera Van Alst acquiring and purchasing rare mystery novels, currently she wants Jordan to fetch Dashiell Hammett’s “Red Harvest” which is a first edition.

Hammett happens to have roots in San Francisco and Jordan, to the disdain of Vera, who reminds me of Cruella De Vil of 101 Dalmatians fame lets her go for a much needed romantic getaway with her boyfriend with cop with ambitions to be a detective, Tyler “Smiley”Dekker.

Jordan starts finding herself in “accidents” all most being run down, their hotel room was ransacked and possible danger lurks for Tyler’s long lost “Gram” after he is reunited with her. Farley Tso who owns a bookshop sells Jordan A first edition copy of “Red Harvest” for Vera and soon vanishes and turns up murdered.

Jordan has gone legit in a family of criminals but finds she might have to bend the rules to save the day.

The Hammett Hex was not what I was expecting, unlike the first books in this series, this one didn't revolve around acquiring Vera's  precious rare mystery books that was kind of on the back burner which was a disappointment to me. The pace started out slow but was then steady to the end.

“Gram” was a feisty new character that is very loveable and kept me turning the pages. Jordan's take charge and firey attitude are back in full form. I can’t wait to read and review the next book in the series.

Book Review/Giveaway: Killing Thyme by Leslie Budewitz

 Title: Killing Thyme
 Author: Leslie Budewitz
Series: Book 3 A Spice Shop Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
 Format: Paperback
Source: Received for Review from Publisher
Star Rating: 5 out of 5
 Reviewed by: Tina

Pepper Reece has spice, a feisty amateur sleuth that will do anything to protect her family and friends from a killer. She's not just killing thyme,  she stop's at nothing, something that detectives Spencer and Tracy somehow cannot do even their names are a joke.

With all jokes aside, the first thing I love about The Spice Shop Mysteries is The spice shop, imagining the tempting aromas of the sweet and savory spices is enough having me wanting to venture the fictional shop and Pike Place Market, in the hustle and bustle. The second thing I love is Pepper mostly for what I explained about above.

Bonnie Clay is a Potter of sculptures and is a vendor in the market. Bonnie Clay came to town with a secret in her past and Lena, Pepper's mother is coming to visit but, they meet up and something is off when Lena thought Bonnie Aka Peggy Manning was dead and there's tension with the pair.

Pepper found Bonnie/Peggy dead in her artist's studio amid fragments of a think clay platter. Trauma to the head found to be her cause of death. With a not-so-nice foodie columnist visiting the spice shop for a review and the theft of Pepper's BFF's family heirloom necklace, it could possibly be a connection, when Pepper shakes up some suspects, it leaves her to wonder until the killer has a spicy taste in their mouth when Pepper sniffs him out.

I love Peppers savvy and energy. Her instincts make Killing Thyme a not to put down mystery. With her failing love life, and a killer to catch you think she won't be able to do it until she discovers not only who the killer is but she unlocks a missing link to her families past and ends up bringing them together. I can't wait to read and review the next book in the series.
