Cats, Cats and more cats are the stars of this mystery but the biggest star is the newest edition, Magpie, the definition of a Magpie is a person that collects things of little or no value it does seem like Finn's little kitty Magpie that he aquired while after several escapes from the animal adoption center, with Magpie found in a old, ratty, bloody couch while working with friend and boss, Shawn is a thief of little things that hold no value or is she but only Finn's dad, Tom an ex cop and fiance Jillian and Jillian's best friend police deputy, Candace may be the only ones to figure out if Magpie's treasures hold and value and could possibly be a key to solving a mystery.

Jillian's other cats, Merlot, Chablis, Syrah are also along for the ride along with Magpie. A little pile of energy and is full of mischief who Finn happens to just love. Jillian and Tom are getting ready to get married but will things be put on hold when a dead body is found at a construction site almost buried under concrete, Jillian and her step daughter, Kara and journalist for the local paper are at the site to witness the action and the victim was recovered and discovered to be the construction company owner.

To make matters even worse there another death and this one may be more than Tom and the police force of Mercy can bear when the police chief is found dead in his home of a apparent suicide. When it is found that both victims are found shot with the same weapon and they were both indeed murdered Tom is then asked to become an interim police chief and head the police force. It's now on for Tom, Candace and Jillian to find a murderer before Tom and Jillian can walk down the aisle.

It was so refreshing to find a ameteur sleuth like Jillian, who is a stickler for the facts not rumors and who loves cats even so much as having a nanny cam installed in her home so she can keep an eye on them when she is out sleuthing. Tom and Jillian's love and romance seem genuine and they seem well suited and perfect for each other and together they seem like the perfect crime fighting duo. Tom and Jillans family and friends also seem like kind hearted and great characters to read about and contribute to making this story so heart warming.

For this reader and reviewer who happens to love cats as much as Jillian, this was a well developed and plotted story with many twists and turns going back and forth as to who could have possibly been the killer but when the killer is revealed I think like me you will be surprised and that was the magic in author Leeann Sweeney's writing, she kept you guessing right up until the end until the last clue was found. If you have a love for cats, romance and heartwarming and charming characters, The Cat, The Sneak and the Secret is for you.

Sydney Strauss has dreams but being a producer for a morning show is not one of them, deep down inside, she wonders what might have been after a failed relationship five years ago with her first love, Zach who ended up cheated on her and she still can't stop thinking about let along get over and missed out opportunities of her one job that she has always dreamed of and that is to be a food writer for the Washington Chronicle newspaper.

When she loses her job, she tries to figure out what to do next, getting drunk in the short term seems to be the answer when she is in the bar a chance meeting with a man named, Jeremy who at first is a major jerk with a shady past that Sydney can't ignore mainly because he once worked as a food writer for the Chronicle  but after Sydney finds a job with a farmers market through her friend, Heidi agrees to go out on a date with him anyway, then she starts writing the farmer's market news letter, thinking its not the Chronicle but it's food writing none the less.

Sydney also brings back to life her long abandoned food blog and it catches the right someones attention at the Chronicle, when the food writing editor asks her to write a piece that's "meaty" but that's not the human interest pieces she wants to write involving food and how food effects peoples lives and where it comes from and makes people lives better.

She writes the piece anyway exposing a scandal involving the farmers market and "Green Grocers" a big time grocery store chain but her heart after her unethical ways of attaining the proof she needs she seems conflicted when it involves Jeremy with that on her mind and all of a sudden Zach waltzes back in her life, she wonders how things can get worse when the article and the truth comes out. Sydney soon wonders if exposing this scandal was worth it considering it hurt the people in her life she cared for.

Sydney is a genuine character with real life flaws, especially when It comes to love, being conficted and making the right choices in life and keeping secrets. I could relate to her being a lot like me with having a love for food and in the love department and not being sure about making the right choices in life.

Dana Bates writing leaves you hooked and wanting more with food, romance, relationships on the brink of disaster and family turmoil.I could not help but rooting for a happy ending for Sydney and all of her loved ones, I grew to love them all and that was the power of a great story and writer. Second bite at the Apple is such a perfect book for the foodie lover, like me but also some one who loves romance, falling in love again and real engaging characters and a delicious story.

Series: Book 3 A Search and Rescue Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime

 Reviewed by: Marlene

Gracie Kinkaid the Camp Manager at Camp Ponderosa and a search and rescue volunteer for the Timber Creek's Sheriff’s office finds herself still reeling from the scandal at the camp that left her friend Jett dead and her best friend Ralph estranged from her. But soon that all takes a back seat to the current madness in her life. On a search for a missing boy, Gracie will soon find herself not only targeted by old enemies but being manipulated by new ones.

She soon grows close to a boy named Baxter, a bright young boy who desperately wants to live with his grandmother but is being isolated and trained for a life of hate. While Gracie is trying to make sense of how people come to hate so much. Her neighbor's cabin John and Vivian is firebombed, surely an act of racism against the African-American couple and their young granddaughter. Gracie believes it was the act of Baxter's cousin Jordan a soldier in the making.

As Gracie befriends and tries to help Baxter she is also has to face the impending forest fires coming in on the valley, her disgruntled relationship with Ralph, her mother's urging to come to her stepfather's deathbed and the return of Rob Christian. In the end it will almost leave her broken and without a direction to turn.

Along with the main plot of the story, there was so many subplots it really keeps you reading. I felt complete empathy for all the stresses Gracie was going through. It was beautifully written. As always I love a strong female that may doubt herself but will stand on her own two feet. Gracie is perfect example of this. There is also Allen the cook at the camp who is not only a great ally but has a great sense of humour that often offers Gracie some relief in all that is going on. Looking forward to Gracie's next chapter in her life.

Meg Barrett has recently turned her life upside down leaving behind a prestigious career in publishing, a wandering fiance, a beautiful Manhattan apartment for the quaint life on the eastern seashore in Montauk. She relocated to a small cottage on the beach and started her own interior design business. She quickly reconnects with her old college roommate Jillian and is offered the job of inventorying her mother, Mrs. Caroline Spenser's vast collection of antiques at her estate, Seacliff in the Hamptons.

Upon her arrival she is shocked to find herself in the tail end moments of a murder. From that moment one Meg sets the task of helping Jillian through this time of mourning and to find her mother's murderer. Along with help from her father, an ex-homicide detective and his retired medical examiner pal, Doc Meg quickly finds herself in the center of maze of lies, revenge and a full load of this family's dirty laundry.

I enjoyed this book immensely it gave you a lot of suspects to look at and kept me guessing, switching up who I though was likely the one who was the murderer. The author created a wonderful intricate web of stories and clues it kept me reading, I almost finished the book in one sitting. The set of characters in this story are engaging and identifiable. I found I respected Meg as a strong, independent woman with a disadvantage that didn't stop her from doing what she wanted and in her own way.

There is also a fair amount of likable male characters, Cole the prodigal son, Van the surfer, Adam the charmer and Doc the protector.

Daphne is eager to start a new life with Ben Jacobs, her fiance who she will soon be marrying. She wants to escape from a painful past and and even more painful previous marriage to Todd Martin, someone who has made her life a living Hell with his years of emotional abuse and attempting to shot Daphne to death.

The future is looking bright for Daphne and her at home baking business, she is a baker and cake decorator with a steady business and she is also baking and decorating her own wedding cake. It all comes crumbling down, when Daphne's ex husband, Todd shows up at her door after being released or possibly escaping from a stint in prison for his attempt on Daphne's life claiming that he is still in love with Daphne and wants to try to make a life with her once again.

Wondering how and why he is here and how he found her, Daphne is confused and horrified and scared, she along with Ben and their family and friends are wondering how and why he really came back after not contacting Daphne for years. Todd is soon found murdered along with a man who has a connection to the wedding and after identifing Todd's body and  soon Daphne is in the midst of the investigation and wants to find their killer so Daphne and Ben can move on and have their happily ever after.

I was never more frustrated with a character than Daphne's mother, she seemed like a cold, heartless, you know what, something that  starts with a B and rhymes with witch toward her daughter. She make me so angry as I read. I could totally understand this mother and daughter relationship being much like my own relationship with my mother but I thought this was a little over the top.

The way her mom treated her  and how she felt about Daphne's ex husband was upsetting but in the end Daphne and her mom came to an understanding but this reader is still not very convinced but hope to see their relationship grow and become better in future books. It's a beautiful thing when baking helped Daphne deal with her life  Killer wedding cake is a perfect sweet concoction of conflict, relationships, delicious cakes and a murder and perfect for a mystery fan with a killer sweet tooth.

I had a dream the night after I read Murder in the Paperback Parlor, I dreamt that I was exploring the hidden passageways inside Storyton Hall. I was searching for the hidden library of books and I didn't want to wake up until I found it. You know your a bibliophile when you start dreaming about books you read, because as anyone close to me will tell you I am obsessed with books.

Valentines Day is fast approaching and Storyton Hall is getting ready for the Romancing the Reader retreat where many fans of romance novels and their authors will attend, excitment is at a fever pitch. Famous best selling romance author, Rosamund York is going to be in residence, there will be a  chocolate truffle making and tasting, a male book cover model contest, a auction and a fashion show for ladies to display the fashions of the times.

When Rosamund's Advanced Reader Copy of her new book is passed out among the attendees, it is not met with rave reviews, and anger and frustration is felt among some of the Romancing the Reader guests especially Rosamund's biggest fan after she reads the book, and another author is jealous of Rosamund's success also with her assistant feeling like a glorified servant. When Jane, the Storyton Hall manager gets a call in the dead of night telling her that Rosemund has been found dead in the garden.

It is now up to Jane being the guardian of Storyton hall and the protector of the secret libary along with the police  to investigate who could have wanted the bestselling romance author dead, there's "Nigel" a freelance journalist and him and Rosamund have secrets to  hide ,and her biggest fan, Maria Stone being angry and frantic about the new book not wanting it to be released and then there's the overworked assistant, Taylor Birch and the competing jealous rival author  the other attendees that could after reading her new book want her dead.

So together with the Fins, a group put together to protect the secret library of Storyton Hall and being a guardian, Jane took a vow to protect Storyton Hall and has a tattoo to prove it. With also taking care of her twin boys and with a blooming romance with her bestfriend's brother but Jane must put thoughts of romance on hold when Storyton Hall becomes jeopradized when Edwin her bestfriend's brother is revealed that he is not who he claims he is and too Jane nothing is more important than finding a murderer of now two people when Nigel the freelance journalist is also found murdered in the Paperback Parlor.

This is only the second book in the Book Retreat Mysteries but it's already a powerful one with unforgetable and dynamic characters like Aunt Octavia and Uncle Aloysius with Jane being a force to be reckoned with when it comes to her life and her job and she makes you anitsipate the next book in the series. Mysteries about books, authors, assistants, and writers are some of my most favorites and if they are yours too you will not be disappointed. Ellery Adams is a powerful writer and her words captivate you to keep turning page after page, a story of murder, jealousy, books and romance is what you have in store when you pick up Murder in the Paperback Parlor.

Somehow I knew just by looking at the cover of this book that this would be a new favorite series of mine, why you ask? Well, it was the scrumptious treats on the cover and the bakery setting being a fan of baking and what life is like inside a bakery and the idea of a cozy mystery in a bakery had me hooked. I'm the type that judges a book by its cover and I knew that I would look forward that what lied ahead of me inside the pages and I was happy that I was proven right.

The first book in the A Bakeshop Mysteries introduces us to Jules Capshaw, shes returning home from being a chef on a cruise ship and escaping from a broken marriage, she is a emotional mess and trying to find where she fits in and belongs and sort out her life. We are also introduced to a Jules mom's bakery Torte where Jules will help her mom bake and run the business but we soon come to find out that Jule's mom has secrets of her own that could destory Torte forever. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is in town and the whole town of Ashland, Oregon is abuzz with excitement being a town with filled with play rights, actors and theater goers with a love for Shakespeare.

Torte is the place where most of the cast of the Shakespeare festival gathers and Nancy Hudson the festivals newest board member finds herself the victim of a crazed murderer, bludgeoned to death inside Torte's walls. Most of  the Shakespeare cast of characters that want her dead with her Lady Macbeth attitude. Being the namesake of Shakespeare's famous play Romeo and Juliet and together with trying to decide if Torte  is where she belongs and her issues with her mom  with Torte and hopefully to find her place once again.Jules takes it upon herself on top of everything else going on in her life and being back home with her high school love and investigator, Thomas working the case, Jules can't help but thinking life is sweet when he is around and being determined to find a killer and save Torte from a uncertain future.

I loved that there was no shortage of fabulous food descriptions  in Meet your Baker. If you love your mysteries like I do with food and in this case baked goods and a home town bakery with delicious treats in the center of it all you will not be disappointed and it was sure comforting to read that this book was filled with them and nothing beats the feeling you get while reading them if your a foodie . Jules is a character that to me  is still finding her way and I still don't completely know who she is but that is but I look forward to getting to know her more in future books. Our ameture sleuth, Jules is a compelling character and in some ways reminds me of myself looking for a place to belong  and has a lot to deal with in her life and with murder in the mix she still seems to keep it together but can she find a murderer and discover herself in the process only reading Meet your Baker will answer that question.

"Stinky Pete" Petrocelli is a homeless family friend that comes and goes to the restaurant, enjoying the homemade wine a little too much, "Stinky Pete" claims he knows things in a conversation with Vic, things that would make a great mystery novel. Learning of a relative who disappeared in Italy, Vic's curosity is peeked.

Engaging and very entertaining, certainly a read in one sitting mystery and in fact I almost did. The Rienzi family were characters that jumped right off the page. It read like a movie reel playing in my head with plenty of delicious Italian food, thrills, family conflict a unforgettable Italian Nonna who doesn't quite see eye to eye with her granddaughter, Vic.

I at first did not like Nonna for how she felt about her granddaughter but she redeemed herself in my eyes in the end and I understood why she felt the way she did but every family has a so called "crazy" one and Nonna fits the bill. I've enjoyed this series from the beginning, I love Vic, a mystery writer, prep cook and ameteur sleuth, everything I dream  to be with strong will and passion for her family underneath it all .

Ahoy Mattie's, it's Pirate Week in Crystal Cove, With pirates having a rich history in Crystal Cove and cookbook store owner, of The Cookbook Nook Jenna Hart is at the helm Okay, I admit it I get caught up speaking pirate-ease while writing this review too but it's not to be helped after reading this book. Different events will be going on in Crystal Cove and The Cookbook Nook is no exception. Between running the Chocolate Book Club meetings Jenna is feeling like she is walking the plank but then an old friend, candy maker and cookbook author, Coco Chastain makes a guest appearance.

But all is not well for long and the rowdy good cheer is brought to a screeching hault when when a famous pot of doubloons are stolen, they are Spanish gold coins, yes, I had to google that one. Jenna's life would not be complete if there was not a murder to investigate and when Coco's editor and owner of Foodie Publishing, Allison Foodie is stabbed to death with scissors, it makes her wonder if its not life imitating art because of her being a editor and Allison being stabbed with scissors.

Suspects surface like Allison's brother, Neil, her photographer, her employee who was fired all having reasons for wanting her dead but soon Coco is suspected of killing Allison and brought in for questioning. Jenna would not be Jenna if she did not try to seek out who could have possibly done this even if she still wonders if Coco could have possibly done it but in her heart of hearts she knows that someone else in Crystal Cove had it in for Allison and Jenna just needs to figure out who it is before Jenna the next on a killers list.

You can't help but being swept in the world of cookbooks and by the time you are finishing reading Fudging the books you will have a list of cookbooks to try out. Perfect for the cookbook fan, this mystery is filled with tasty food descriptions, cook book titles, a scenic atmosphere and a murder of a foodie related victim with a name to match. Being a big fan of cookbooks myself, I have been devouring many of them lately and you want to pick a few up after reading Fudging the Books. This is a favorite series of mine and it will be yours too. Foodies, Cookbooks, delicious food cooked by chef Katie and with some new and delicious attempts from Jenna of some tasty chocolate recipes complete with recipes included. A mystery that will make your mouth water.

CRUSHED VELVET, Material Witness #2 | Diane Vallere --

Have you ever thought about what might happen if the things you did over the course of a 24-hour period of time made you the leading suspect in a murder investigation? That’s exactly what happens to Genevieve Girard, tea shop owner, Francophile, and new friend of Poly Monroe, in CRUSHED VELVET. Even worse than accidentally creating evidence, Genevieve is convinced that maybe she accidentally killed someone, too. I’m a fan of true crime television shows.

I like watching how investigators can piece together bits of evidence to tell the story of what really happened at a crime scene. On Forensic Files (my favorite), often it’s the most obscure item that connects a killer to a crime. I’ve seen cases where glitter on a victim has been traced to the mark down shelf at Hot Topic, where the brewery code on discarded bottles of beer are used not only to pinpoint where it was produced but also to follow it from the assembly line to where it was sold, and where tiny particles of synthetic rope fibers, invisible to the naked eye, were the only evidence to connect a victim to the trunk of a car—and therefore the car owner—who abducted her.

Locard’s exchange principle on which forensic science was founded states that every contact leaves a trace. In short, it means that if you come into contact with something or someone, you and that object or person will exchange physical materials. Through your natural day to day activities you will pick up and leave behind all kinds of things. The spritz of perfume from a cologne counter could trace you back to the mall. The scent of Chinese food in your clothes can trace you back to where you had lunch. The CVS card that you used in order to get the best deal on paper towels tells what time you were at the drug store and what you did while you were there.

This principle is exactly what gets Genevieve into so much trouble—and why this book was so much fun to write. And if Genevieve didn’t have her friend Poly on her side, CRUSHED VELVET might have a whole different outcome.
