Book Review/Giveaway: Engaged in Danger by Barbara Venkataraman

Title: Engaged In Danger
 Author: Barbara Venkataraman
Series: Book 4 A Jamie Quinn Mystery
 Publisher: Self published
 Format: PDF
Source: Received for review from author
 Star Rating: 5 out 5
 Reviewed by: Marlene

Jamie Quinn is in over her head when Nan Glasser wife of notorious lawyer Marvin Glasser wants a divorce and for her to represent her. Even though she tried to pass her along to another lawyer, her and her friend Grace end up taking the case. Along with helping her neighbors, Sandy and Mike find out what happened to Sandy's twin sister Sara and her husband Jamie has her plate full. If that isn't enough to keep her head spinning, her boyfriend Kip has left for for Australia for three months on the eve of her mother's anniversary death, Duke, her go to private eye is in the middle of his own relationship drama and soon her and Grace are at odds.

While her world personally and professionally spirals downward and out of control she finds her inner strength to keep on moving through it, sometimes with the help of a bottle of wine and her friendemy cat Mr. Paws (Previously known as Mr. Pain in the ass, I think). Through exhaustive research and investigating she soon finds that not everything and everyone is not who they seem to be. As soon as she thinks she is getting the hang of what is going on around her, her and Grace have an attempt made on there lives. Thus, one act causing all pieces to fall into place.

This is quite the story full of drama that is action packed, with twists, turns and it doesn't stop. It was like reading a maze. I also love the characters, they are very relatable. I identify with Jamie quite a bit, her insecurities, feeling out of place in a career choice that sometimes doesn't suit her anymore, her quirkiness with her friend Grace. She's great.

Then there is Grace and Duke two good friends that no matter what have her back. I also enjoyed Marvin Glasser, I think he is the perfect example of the male ego. Doing what he wants to get what he wants without consideration of others till someone finally stands up and says enough. Then he's off running trying to do damage control to contain his mess. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and look forward to the next in the Jamie Quinn series.

Book Review: Death of a Mad Hatter by Jenn McKinlay

Title: Death of a Mad Hatter
Author: Jenn McKinlay
Series: Book 2 A Hat Shop Mystery
Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
Source: Library
Format: Paperback
Rating:  5 stars
Reviewed by: Tina

While on my book break from my blog I took a break from mysteries and found I missed reading them more and more and while on my search after much thought and debate with myself I wanted a mystery that was set in England because I always wanted to go there and I looked no further that Jenn McKinlay's Hat Shop mysteries. I had read the first one, "Cloche and Dagger" and enjoyed it so off to the library I went to get "Death of a Mad Hatter."

The Grisby's are quite the family, a typical and highly disfunctional one but unlike most of us one of them could possibly have murder in their hearts. Scarlet Parker reigning from the States and her British Cousin, Viv Tremont work in their grandmothers hat shop called "Mim's Whims" picturesque, England to make hats for a "Alice in Wonderland" themed afternoon tea for a fundraiser for a local children's hospital.

The Grisbys want to raise enough money being a high society family to name a wing in the hospital after the family patriarch who has since passed away. The families "heir" and the Mad Hatter of the party is found dead by Scarlet when poison was found on the hat that he was wearing.

That's when the Grisby's really start to show their true colors and amongst all the family problems with its share of drama Scarlet wants to try to help find out wanted this "Heir" to the Grisby fortune dead. With Harrison, the shops business manager trying to put a stop to Scarlet's "investigating" out of so called concern for her, tension between them mounts. Not listening to Harrison, Scarlet  sets out to find a killer before she find herself in a proverbial rabbit hole for good.

Author Jenn Mckinlay is so good at character development and bringing her characters to life. For example, Harrison and Scarlet, some how I'm rooting for them to come together and find each other and it was brilliant how Ms McKinlay wove in the tension between them. That's what brings me back to reading Jenn Mckinlay's mysteries again and again is the way she writes, her themes and who her characters are.

When you find yourself sitting there and wondering whats going to happen to a certain character you know that series you will want to read more of and it doesn't hurt to have a sexy British man like Harrison to dream about either.

Get ready for a mystery with an endearing senior crime fighting duo with a small town setting that will have you wanting to read the next book or if your like me wanting to go back and read the previous ones too !!!

Friends, Phyllis,Carolyn Sam and Eve are retired teachers who live together in a lovely house in Weatherford, Texas. Phyllis has a knack for baking and solving the town's murders.

Phyllis and Carolyn are gearing up for a recipe contest that turns out to be a friendly competition between the two, they each need to submit and prepare recipes for  Taste of Texas Magazine.

While that is going on Sam adopts a dog he has always wanted from the shelter, a Dalmatian he names Buck who was hit by a car before arriving to the shelter.

Sam and Phyllis take Buck to the local vet, Hank Baxter who is in trouble of his own when he is arrested for the murder of his wife while at his Animal Clinic's Halloween Party for the animals he treats and kids to dress up in their cutest and spookiest costumes. With doggie treats and cookies made and provided by Phyllis and Carolyn.

Sam being convinced Dr. Baxter is innocent sets out to find who really murdered Hank's wife after only knowing him for a week but he comes across a few stumbling blocks and a few suspects along the way when Sam and Hank's lawyer enlist Phyllis to help them sniff out a killer with Buck faithfully by their side.

A lighthearted mystery in the spirit of Halloween with a surprising twist when the killer is revealed. A perfect blend of cute animals and food makes Trick or Deadly Treat a winner.

I loved getting to know Phyllis with her love for all things culinary and her keen murder solving skills and Sam with his Southern drawl. In my mind I pictured him as a tall, handsome man with salt and pepper hair.

Happy Halloween !!!

Carly Bell Hartwell of Hitching Post, Alabama comes from a long line of witches with healing powers that she sells in her potion shop. Along with her shop every year from Halloween to All Soul's Day on November 2nd she tries to hide away from the world, the ghost world. For those three days ghosts can come and seek her help to cross over or be sentenced for another year in their graves. Unlike her cousin Delia who embraces this time, Carly experienced a bad ghost and no longer wants to put herself through the hardship she went through before.

But this year her mama has different plans she must attend a masquerade ball in support of her father's nomination to a prestige committee in their community. For Carly if it isn't the chance of being caught by a ghost it is having to come face to face with her boyfriend's witch (but not her kind of witch) mother. Patrica Davis Jackson is one of the most prestigious women in the area and despises Carly's involvement with her son, Dylan.

While at the masquerade Carly comes to face her worse fear she has been spotted by a ghost and is now obliged to help him. And he is not just any ghost but the ghost of the man that Patrica Davis Jackson has just been accused of killing and is at the center of a blackmailing scheme.

As Carly, her cousin Delia and her boyfriend Dylan try to clear his mother's name they find that everyone has secrets hidden away and are willing to pay to keep them that way. Carly and Delia will also have to help two additional ghosts a poor woman that wants to see her grandchild before crossing and a man who wants to know what happened to his beloved dog, Louella but beloved only by him.

I loved this story it had lots of twists and turns and you really felt for the characters. Everyone has secrets and this story proves sometimes secrets binds you will others can effect the ones around you without even knowing. As for the characters, I loved them all. Even Patricia Davis Jackson. I especially related to Delia and Hyacinth. Looking forward to reading about Carly in her next story. Happy Halloween!

 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
Mystery Series: Book 3 A Bridal Bouquet Shop Mystery
 Format: Paperback
Source: Received for Review from Publisher
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
 Reviewed by: Tina

Someone never fails to push up some daisies in the A Bridal Bouquet Shop Mysteries and it's always fun to figure out who that someone is going to be and how the co-owner of the Rose in Bloom flower shop, Audrey Bloom will be connected to someone involved and how she gets caught up in yet another mystery .

The daughter of a local historian is getting married and Audrey and the staff at Roses in Bloom, including Audrey's very pregnant cousin, Liv are providing the flowers for their medieval-themed wedding at a encampment in their town of Ramble.

At the wedding Audrey spots someone from her past that she thought disappeared from her life forever and she wonders how it will affect her life. When the father of the groom is found dead by poisoning from the deadly monkshood plant found in the forest surrounding the encampment it is proven that the father of the groom and owner of a pharmaceutial company, Barry Brooks was indeed murdered.

Audrey has enough on her plate with getting flowers ready for the wedding in this not so typical medieval setting , the someone from her past and with two potential love interests, Audrey suddenly finds herself in the middle of it all with a growing suspect list. She needs to weed out all the guests to find the killer with a hidden secret.

You will love learning about the meaning and the language of flowers as I did. It is a great premise to this series. I came to love Audrey and wanting to know what she will be caught up in next had me wanting to pick up and read Floral Depravity. I was not really care for the medieval theme but I loved all the twists, turns, and secrets some of these characters and the story held.

Coming to know more about Audrey and her past was a turning point for her character, I thought that author, Beverly Allen beautifully brought to the forefront. I really did not agree with how Audrey dealt with the someone from her past and I felt myself relating to her because I lost the same person she had but I  still love Audrey. A Sweet smelling flower filled thrill ride of a mystery made Floral Depravity like a flower in full bloom.

Book Review/Giveaway: Just Killing Time by Julianne Holmes

Title: Just Killing Time
 Author: Julianne Holmes
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
Series: Book 1 A Clock Shop Mystery
 Format: Paperback
Source: Received for review from Author
 Rating: Five Stars
 Reviewed by: Tina

Being a fan of clocks, watches and timepieces and always having a OCD need to know what time it is, I wanted to give this first book in the A Clock Shop Mysteries a try and I wasn't disappointed. Author Julianne Holmes transported me into the world of the Cog & Sprocket Clock shop and I found myself not wanting the book to end.

Ruth Clagan deeply regrets not being there for her Grandfather Thom, whom Ruth affectionately calls G.T. after her grandmother's death. G.T. is a clockmaker who runs the Cog & Sprocket Clock shop and Ruth also is a clockmaker who has a passion for the craft.

G.T. is soon found murdered in his shop after a break and enter and Ruth inherits the Cog & Sprocket but not only does she inherit that but something else that’s a part of the town of Orchard that G.T loved so much. Ruth is busily trying to rush to finish repairs to unfinished clocks and the task seems endless.

Ruth is trying to come to terms with having a step-grandmother, the shop cat, Bezel and living in the not so functional upstairs quarters of the shop. G.T. shop was loved and he was a respected member of the community but a close-knit community like Orchard, Massachusetts as Ruth comes to find out has people with hidden lies and deep dark secrets worth killing for. Ruth needs to find the truth and who killed her grandfather before her time runs out.

Your time will be well spent reading this first book in the A Clock Shop Mysteries. I could feel the love Ruth felt for her grandfather through the page. I found myself crying at the end. Very emotional story that will tug on your heart strings and I found myself feeling a deep connection with Ruth and her step-grandmother. A unique premise to this cozy mystery series that will catch your attention like it did mine and will have you after reading  waiting to read the next book  in this series.

Alison Dixon is the president of the Pine Haven, Iliniois St.Barts Altar and Rosary Guild. As she announces the big jackpot on the church's bingo night she suddenly drops dead while tasting Pet's chili, a client of Lilah who is a member of the church.

With another death of Pine Haven's librarian due to another poisoning. Lilah, the secret chef must uncover the truth before a murderer stirs up more trouble for Lilah, her covered dishes and her secret clientele.

I know this series will be a new favorite when the protagonist has a passion for cooking, like me and also always has a song in her head also like me. Lilah was also very relatable and down to earth, which drew me into the story even more and made the book hard to put down. Julia Buckley's The Big Chili was very well written and kept me entertained until the murderer was revealed and also a very tantalizing beginning to a promising new culinary mystery series.

Maybe I'm a little biased because this is my most favorite series. It's such an honor that I get to read the Murder she Wrote books before they are released. Also the fact that Jessica Fletcher is my all time favorite amateur sleuth.

Cliff Cooper is in the hospital claiming he is on his death bed, but his doctor, Dr, Hazlitt thinks he may recover if only Cliff would listen and take his medication. Cliff, being convinced he is on deaths door- step talks to his friend and mystery writer, Jessica Fletcher to have Eve Simpson, Cabot Coves star real estate agent to sell his house that is in questionable condition and filled to the brim with bookshelves filled with books. One aspect I truly loved so he can give the proceeds to the grandson he raised after his death and there were also rumors of the house being haunted.

When Cliff is found dead in his hospital bed, Dr Hazlitt with the help of Jessica starts to doubt how he really died and with the discovery of another dead body within the house's walls. Jessica's observations and sleuthing may lead her to trouble this time.

Flawless and suspenseful. A perfect edition to the Murder She Wrote series. Secrets, A haunted house, flawed characters and a book lover as a murder victim.Surprising twists and turns will have you wondering how and why. I'm very much anticipating the next book in this book in this series and after forty-four books, this series will stand the test of time.

Book Review/Giveaway: Trick or Deceit by Shelley Freydont

Title: Trick or Deceit
 Author: Shelley Freydont
Series: Book 4 A Celebration Bay Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime

In Celebration Bay, a family friendly destination town they take holidays very seriously. It's hard not to imagine the picturesque beauty with the small town setting. Halloween is one holiday that holds no exception. There's a haunted house competition in Celebration Bay, three finalists are vying for the winners prize of ten thousand dollars with the new community center receiving the rest of the proceeds.

Liv Montgomery is a event coordonator for Celebration Bay, may be in over her head when she invited her friend, Jon Preston who is a director of development for a company that provides funding for projects like the building of the community center. Liv is hoping to receive a grant from Jon's company for the funding of the new community center.

The first place winner is crowned. "The Museum of Yankee Horrors" but the owner, Barry's celebration is short lived when his haunted house is vandalized. When the body of Lucille, the contest judge is found with a bruise on her head and is found by the coroner to be strangled to death on the property of "The Museum of Yankee Horrors". Jon, surprizingly in a twisted turn of events becomes a suspect. Not far behind when the second runner up, Ernie Bolton and his "Monster Mansion" who may have it in for Barry and his "Museum of Yankee Horrors"

This time of year reading a Halloween themed cozy mystery is what I was in the mood for, to get myself in the Halloween spirit. Trick or Deceit has all the makings of a perfect Halloween mystery with haunted houses, cats, witches inhabiting and running a business in the town and a crime fighting dog named, Whiskey who happened to a favorite of mine.

The one downfall I had was the very slow pace of the story. It was making me lose interest very quickly, it took me a few more days than normal to finish because the story was not as exciting. At first the characters seemed very one demintional to me but I loved the small town gossip and rumor mill and the extra marital affairs that made it more interesting and the characters seem more like real, flawed people.

Book Review/Giveaway: The Man Who Fell from the Sky By Margaret Coel

Title: The Man Who Fell From The Sky
 Author: Margaret Coel
Series: Book 19 A Wind River Reservation Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime Mystery
 Format: Hardcover
Source: Received for review from Publisher
 Star Rating: 4.5 out 5
 Reviewed by: Marlene

When Robert Walking Bear's body is found by a father and son going a on a fishing trip questions are raised on the circumstances of his death. Although initially thought of as a suicide then an accident someone won't let him rest. A so-called anonymous witness making accusations of murder sets the FBI on a wild goose chase.

Not willing to come forward or give any details the anonymous witness keeps contacting Vicki Holden, an Arapaho lawyer and Father John, the mission priest. All the while Robert's widow Ruth just wants to bury him and move on with her grieving process. As it unfolds questions arise regarding Butch Cassidy's buried treasure. Robert supposedly had the original map drawn by Cassidy himself and on numerous occasions went to the mountains on his own for days at a time searching.

Although most believe the map is a fake once the moccasin telegraph gets wind it is a murder everything comes into question. Robert's cousins all become suspect even his cousin Cutter that recently moved home from Oklahoma. Cutter who is quite taken by Vicki starts to court her but she also has competition as Ruth has seemed to latch onto him as well for support in the wake of her husband's death.

As both women struggle with Robert's death in both ways they can always count on Cutter. While all this is going on the community also has to deal with a documentary film crew that will do anything to enhance their production and want to implement the murder into the film. Wanting to capture a piece of history that still impacts modern day society. In the end this piece of history truly does have a modern day impact on many lives.

I love reading stories and watching movies/TV shows (Eg. Longimire) that capture the modern day struggles and friendships between people that live on the reservations and law enforcement. It is what drawn me to the series, although I am not much of a western fan, I loved how the author balanced the past with present, bringing you into two worlds just not one. This story boasted some memorable characters.

I especially identified with Ruth, sort of lost in a relationship, straddling grief and new found freedom, trying to be strong but falling miserably apart and trying to latch onto someone that makes you feel anything positive then what you are feeling. And then there is Cutter, I call him the smooth operator, the perfect man but no one is that perfect. I got to know Vicki more with tidbits of her back story she is a great example of a strong female lead. Oh and there is Walks-on, gotta love him too. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Book Review/ Book Giveaway: Night of the White Buffalo by Margaret Coel

Title: Night Of The White Buffalo
 Author: Margaret Coel
Series: Book 18 A Wind River Reservation Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime Mystery
 Format: Paperback
Source: Received for review from publisher
 Star Rating: 4.5 out 5
 Reviewed by : Marlene
When a white buffalo calf is born it is a sign that the creator is with us, a sign of hope and connection. When the white buffalo is born and news quickly spreads thousands of people of all colors and origins start flocking to the Broken Buffalo ranch. With this blessing also comes a lot of attention, attention the current owner needs to keep a steady eye on.

Along with this blessing, there seems to be a lot of trouble surrounding the ranch, reservation and nearby highways. Someone has been taking shots at cowboys on the highway but when Dennis Carey, owner of the Broken Buffalo ranch ends up being a victim of this, his wife Sheila has to take on the responsibility for the ranch as well as the white buffalo calf. Although Sheila is a tough woman she still seems to be coming apart. Soon a local Arapaho lawyer, Vicki Holden and a mission priest, Father John find links between missing ranch hands and the shots taken at vehicles on the highway.

After some digging and asking to many questions they find that all the trouble they have been having in their small but fragile community can be led back to one place, the one place that is now serving as the communities centre, the Broken Buffalo ranch.

I really enjoyed this story, I loved how you were given multiple story lines and they soon started to converge on each other. This is the first Wind River Mystery I have read. I know there has been quite a few books written before and sometimes I can feel reluctant to start a series so late in its inception due to all the history formed with the story and characters but Ms. Coel did a great job of reintroducing her characters, it's a book that could be read as a stand alone and you wouldn't feel lost by all the history that is built up.

Father John and Vicki Holden, the two main characters of the book are good wholesome people. We need more of them in our world. I enjoyed reading about them and how much they cared and what they did for the community around them. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, The Man Who Fell From The Sky. Please look for my review tomorrow.

If you are a fan of touching stories about mothers and daughters with books and libraries and a cat named Charlie in a so-called haunted lighthouse then Booked for Trouble is for you. I was not prepared for what awaited me once I started reading this book and I finished this book with more of an appreciation for my mother. I would have never thought a mystery would have such a impact on me personally but it did.

Lucy is a librarian at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, that in itself being a beautiful and picturesque setting if not only by made by the cover of this book but just imagine it for yourself  as I did reading.  It made Booked for Trouble seem more real, like a movie playing in my head. Lucy loves her life at the library and would not trade it for the world with the library book club, the library cat, Charles and two men that are important to the town vying for her affections.

Lucy's mother, Suzanne, a debutante, comes to visit, and Lucy suspects this is no ordinary visit. Lucy seems to think her mother is acting strangely, displaying odd behavior but can't quite figure out why. She really wants Lucy  head back to live in their home to their hometown of Boston to be with her ex-fiance that she is not in love with but Lucy being happy where she is in her heart does not want to go back but like most mothers and daughters Lucy lets her mother have her say.

While checking into the hotel Suzanne, witnessed by almost the entire hotel and Lucy and the manager of the hotel, George. Suzanne has an argument with a former classmate, Karen Kivas and it seems that Karen knows something about Suzanne's past that she does not want to be let out but what is heard by everyone. Soon after the argument Karen is found dead outside the library by a blow to the head, Suzanne shoots up to the top of the police's suspect list. When it does not seem to Lucy that that police are looking at anyone else that could have done this, Lucy needs to save her mother before she has to check out of Bodie Island, and out of Lucy and their families lives and into a prison.

This is a new favorite series for me, Life in a library in a lighthouse,  a cat, a relatable and engaging amateur sleuth with an intriguing , supporting cast of characters that also make this mystery great and a murder with a mother and daughter story mixed in that touches the heart.  The setting of this story brings out the true meaning of a cozy mystery. I am looking forward to reading and reviewing the next book in this series, Reading up a Storm in April 2016.

Jordan Bingham has finally settled after the tremulous events that happened last fall and believes her life is finally back on track. Everything is going well, her job for Miss Vera Van Alst, her relationship with Office Tyler “Smiley” Dekker, her friends and family by her side.

When Miss Van Alst receives an invitation to buy a set of Dame Ngaio Marsh books from Chadwick Kauffman at his country home, Summerlea nothing could be better. Jordan and Miss Van Alst and Uncle Kev to are invited for a luncheon to discuss and finalize the deal.

Soon after Kauffman turns up murdered. Being spotted as the last people to leave the home Vera, Jordan and Kev become the sole suspects in the case. As the investigation unfolds Jordan finds herself on her own to find out who the real killer is and all the accomplices to go with him. No one is who they seem even the victim. She finds herself on the outside of the law and facing the murderer himself in the original crime scene.

The story was very emotion driven and poor Jordan kept coming up against walls and dead ends. It made for a great read. As always I love Jordan and (even) Vera too. Their relationship is growing and you can see Vera's character evolving in each book.

Book Review/Giveaway: Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch

Series: Book 1 A Bad Luck Cat Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime Mystery
 Genre: Cozy Mystery
 Format: Paperback

Sabrina Tate has dreams like I do of being a writer. After a failed job in a law firm in Houston, Texas she moves to Lavender, Texas to write "The Great American Novel" and help her aunt Rowe with her vacation rental business because of her aunt's broken leg. "Around the World Cottages", with each cottage named and decorated after a country that Aunt Rowe has visited, an aspect I loved.

The whole town seems suspicious of what is known as the "Bad Luck Cat" making his way across the town and residents are in fear of the cat crossing their path and bringing them bad luck but not Sabrina. On the contrary, she has never been superstitious of anything supernatural except maybe the lady that owns the antique store who thinks Sabrina is a witch and not just because of her name.

The "Bad Luck Cat" leads Sabrina to the discovery of a dead body and it turns out to be Aunt Rowe's deadbeat cousin, Bobby Joe Flowers, he had a list of enemies a mile long and loved the women. Not so good for Aunt Rowe is that she and Bobby fought before his death and now Aunt Rowe has become a number one suspect in his murder. Bobby has claimed  to be her brother making Aunt Rowe furious.

Sabrina on on the other hand is in a dilemma, with a appointment with a famous agent to talk about her book and helping prove her aunt Rowe is innocent and attending to her new friend a "Bad Luck Cat" Sabrina names "Hitchcock" who Sabrina can't help but come to love. Hitchcock is on the case along with Sabrina, clawing at the bit to find a killer before Sabrina's luck runs out.

I loved Sabrina from the first page, It's so great to be able to relate to a character and we seem a lot alike with our love for writing and certain "Bad Luck Cats". Sabrina has this determined attitude that I find is also a trait we share. Sabrina is a great ameteur sleuth. Hitchcock and Sabrina make a perfect human and feline crime fighting pair and this was a great beginning to a series.

Hitchcock will become a fan favorite  with his sneakiness and determination to get out of Sabrina's cottage to find more clues. Kay Finch's writing is fast paced, exciting and the story is engaging. Black Cat Crossing is a fun thrill ride with a "Bad Luck Cat" that becomes Sabrina's   good luck charm.

Book Review/Giveaway: The Cat, The Sneak and the Secret by Leann Sweeney

Title: The Cat, The Sneak and the Secret
Author: Leann Sweeney
Series: Book 7 A Cats in Trouble Mysteries
Publisher: Obsidian Mystery
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Format: Paperback

Star Rating: 5 stars

Cats, Cats and more cats are the stars of this mystery but the biggest star is the newest edition, Magpie, the definition of a Magpie is a person that collects things of little or no value it does seem like Finn's little kitty Magpie that he aquired while after several escapes from the animal adoption center, with Magpie found in a old, ratty, bloody couch while working with friend and boss, Shawn is a thief of little things that hold no value or is she but only Finn's dad, Tom an ex cop and fiance Jillian and Jillian's best friend police deputy, Candace may be the only ones to figure out if Magpie's treasures hold and value and could possibly be a key to solving a mystery.

Jillian's other cats, Merlot, Chablis, Syrah are also along for the ride along with Magpie. A little pile of energy and is full of mischief who Finn happens to just love. Jillian and Tom are getting ready to get married but will things be put on hold when a dead body is found at a construction site almost buried under concrete, Jillian and her step daughter, Kara and journalist for the local paper are at the site to witness the action and the victim was recovered and discovered to be the construction company owner.

To make matters even worse there another death and this one may be more than Tom and the police force of Mercy can bear when the police chief is found dead in his home of a apparent suicide. When it is found that both victims are found shot with the same weapon and they were both indeed murdered Tom is then asked to become an interim police chief and head the police force. It's now on for Tom, Candace and Jillian to find a murderer before Tom and Jillian can walk down the aisle.

It was so refreshing to find a ameteur sleuth like Jillian, who is a stickler for the facts not rumors and who loves cats even so much as having a nanny cam installed in her home so she can keep an eye on them when she is out sleuthing. Tom and Jillian's love and romance seem genuine and they seem well suited and perfect for each other and together they seem like the perfect crime fighting duo. Tom and Jillans family and friends also seem like kind hearted and great characters to read about and contribute to making this story so heart warming.

For this reader and reviewer who happens to love cats as much as Jillian, this was a well developed and plotted story with many twists and turns going back and forth as to who could have possibly been the killer but when the killer is revealed I think like me you will be surprised and that was the magic in author Leeann Sweeney's writing, she kept you guessing right up until the end until the last clue was found. If you have a love for cats, romance and heartwarming and charming characters, The Cat, The Sneak and the Secret is for you.

Sydney Strauss has dreams but being a producer for a morning show is not one of them, deep down inside, she wonders what might have been after a failed relationship five years ago with her first love, Zach who ended up cheated on her and she still can't stop thinking about let along get over and missed out opportunities of her one job that she has always dreamed of and that is to be a food writer for the Washington Chronicle newspaper.

When she loses her job, she tries to figure out what to do next, getting drunk in the short term seems to be the answer when she is in the bar a chance meeting with a man named, Jeremy who at first is a major jerk with a shady past that Sydney can't ignore mainly because he once worked as a food writer for the Chronicle  but after Sydney finds a job with a farmers market through her friend, Heidi agrees to go out on a date with him anyway, then she starts writing the farmer's market news letter, thinking its not the Chronicle but it's food writing none the less.

Sydney also brings back to life her long abandoned food blog and it catches the right someones attention at the Chronicle, when the food writing editor asks her to write a piece that's "meaty" but that's not the human interest pieces she wants to write involving food and how food effects peoples lives and where it comes from and makes people lives better.

She writes the piece anyway exposing a scandal involving the farmers market and "Green Grocers" a big time grocery store chain but her heart after her unethical ways of attaining the proof she needs she seems conflicted when it involves Jeremy with that on her mind and all of a sudden Zach waltzes back in her life, she wonders how things can get worse when the article and the truth comes out. Sydney soon wonders if exposing this scandal was worth it considering it hurt the people in her life she cared for.

Sydney is a genuine character with real life flaws, especially when It comes to love, being conficted and making the right choices in life and keeping secrets. I could relate to her being a lot like me with having a love for food and in the love department and not being sure about making the right choices in life.

Dana Bates writing leaves you hooked and wanting more with food, romance, relationships on the brink of disaster and family turmoil.I could not help but rooting for a happy ending for Sydney and all of her loved ones, I grew to love them all and that was the power of a great story and writer. Second bite at the Apple is such a perfect book for the foodie lover, like me but also some one who loves romance, falling in love again and real engaging characters and a delicious story.

 Author: M.L. Rowland
Series: Book 3 A Search and Rescue Mystery
 Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
 Format: Paperback

Star Rating: 4 out of 5
 Reviewed by: Marlene

Gracie Kinkaid the Camp Manager at Camp Ponderosa and a search and rescue volunteer for the Timber Creek's Sheriff’s office finds herself still reeling from the scandal at the camp that left her friend Jett dead and her best friend Ralph estranged from her. But soon that all takes a back seat to the current madness in her life. On a search for a missing boy, Gracie will soon find herself not only targeted by old enemies but being manipulated by new ones.

She soon grows close to a boy named Baxter, a bright young boy who desperately wants to live with his grandmother but is being isolated and trained for a life of hate. While Gracie is trying to make sense of how people come to hate so much. Her neighbor's cabin John and Vivian is firebombed, surely an act of racism against the African-American couple and their young granddaughter. Gracie believes it was the act of Baxter's cousin Jordan a soldier in the making.

As Gracie befriends and tries to help Baxter she is also has to face the impending forest fires coming in on the valley, her disgruntled relationship with Ralph, her mother's urging to come to her stepfather's deathbed and the return of Rob Christian. In the end it will almost leave her broken and without a direction to turn.

Along with the main plot of the story, there was so many subplots it really keeps you reading. I felt complete empathy for all the stresses Gracie was going through. It was beautifully written. As always I love a strong female that may doubt herself but will stand on her own two feet. Gracie is perfect example of this. There is also Allen the cook at the camp who is not only a great ally but has a great sense of humour that often offers Gracie some relief in all that is going on. Looking forward to Gracie's next chapter in her life.
