Featured Mystery: Unholy Matrimony by Peg Cochran

Today we are featuring a great new mystery by Peg Cochran, author of the Gourmet De-Lite Mysteries and the Sweet Nothings Mysteries (as Meg London). She has a new book on the shelves...

The hilarious Lucille Mazzarella is back and planning a wedding. But even the worst Bridezilla can’t create the wedding drama she’s about to face in this second book in the series. Desperate to see her pregnant daughter Bernadette married before the baby comes, Lucille is engrossed in all things wedding. Nothing will distract her from planning this Mazzarella main event. Nothing, that is, except for the murder of the mother of the groom. Just when things couldn’t possibly get any worse, Lucille is named as the prime suspect, and it’s a race against time as she and her best friend Flo struggle with shady financial dealings, a family that isn’t at all what it seems, a groom that might not be all man, and a little bundle of joy that might make an appearance before the mother can say I do.

They decide on baking cupcakes for a cupcake towers for the event and a recipe contest where each of the participants submit a recipe made by Mel and Angie.

When a judge is found dead under the cupcake display table the pageant world turns upside down and Lupe, friend of Mel and Angie and also friend of Oz, one of Fairy Tale Cupcakes employees, decides to participate in the pageant she becomes a mark of another contestant?'s presumptuous stage mother and accused of the murder. Mel and Angie must stop at nothing to find a killer that's lurking within the beauty pageant walls before Lupe's cupcake is baked.

This is my very favorite series, I have read every book so far. You can't help but fall in love with all of the characters. Like cupcakes, I can't get enough of this cupcake bakery series. I'm not a big fan of beauty pageants either but the author found amazing way to incorporate cupcakes into the story and that's what I enjoy about his series. Cupcakes and Murder are always center stage. I can?t wait for #7.

TJ Jensen's life is full as it can be with the Serenity, Nevada Winter Carnival. As coach she is responsible to help the ski and snowboard teams practice for its upcoming demonstration and competitions, then she is coordinating the choir for their first live performance, and she has been asked to e a bridesmaid in her friends, Maude's and Mille's double wedding. On the personal side she has the care and raising of her two young half-sisters, Ashley and Gracie, since their mother died and left her as guardian. Tj moved back into the resort Maggie's Hideaway so that her father Mike and Grandfather Ben could help her raise the girls.

When the body of Travis Davidson is found TJ has no plans to get involved because her plate is full to over-flowing. That is until Sheriff Boggs settles on Chelsea Hunter as the killer. Even though the witnesses and evidence points to her, TJ is convinced she is innocent. So no matter how busy she is she knows she has no choice but to investigate to find the real killer. Who is right? Can she find the real killer before he finds a way to stop her? Once again TJ going above and beyond her normal teaching duties. Join her as she checks out the many people who had motives to whittle it down to the one. Perhaps Serenity isn't so serene after all.

I found Kathi Daley's cozy to be a mix of humor and suspense. With witty dialog and picturesque passages that make you feel as though you are in the middle of the story yourself, Ms. Daley has written a story that is a pleasure to read. Be warned ahead of time though TJ Jensen and her Paradise Lake Mysteries are addictive. Luckily these cozies can be read as stand alone. Even luckier for us there is Book 1, Pumpkins in Paradise already out for us to enjoy now and Book 3, Bikinis In Paradise will be out soon and I for one will be waiting in line to read it as soon as it does.

If you have read both of the books look to Kathi Daley's other cozy series Zoe Donovan Mysteries because they are awesome as well.

Zoe and Jack have made it through their first year of marriage and are in Rome to celebrate. While there Jack's security company has also been hired for a gala at a museum featuring priceless gems. There have been several burglaries in Rome in the past few months all of them involving gems. The first night of the exhibit seems to turn out fine, but when they wake the next morning they discover that the gems are missing. When the exhibit organizer turns up missing, also, what else are people think but that he was involved. And because of Jack's connection to the gentlemen, Jack and Zoe are under suspicion also, especially when some of the jewels end up in Zoe's bag. Join them on their investigation through a few of Italy's beautiful cities for the show's organizer.

Sara also writes the Ellie Avery series, which are all cozy mysteries also. I seem to have a bit of trouble deciding which of Sara's series I prefer most, maybe by the time Sara writes two or three more books in each series I'll be able decide which is my favorite. Why not do yourself a favor and pick one of her books next time you're at Amazon or Barnes & Noble and give Sara's books a read.

Theodosia Browning has never considered herself a wine connoisseur—tea has always been her forte. But that doesn’t mean she’s going to pass up an invitation to a fancy wine-tasting party at the upscale Knighthall Winery, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina.

But a sweet evening takes on a bitter aftertaste when a dead body is discovered in one of the wine barrels. The son of proprietor Jordan Knight has been murdered.

Dissatisfied with the police investigation, Knight turns to Theo for help. She’s heard through the grapevine that there are both family and business problems at Knighthall. They say in vino veritas, but everyone at the winery seems to be lying through their teeth. Sorting through the guest list as well as family and staff, Theo has her pick of suspects. Reviewed by: DelAnne

This is the type of book cozy lovers look for. It has a warm and likable heroine who steps up to solve the mystery when all are telling her there isn't one. TJ returns to Serenity following the death of her mother. She assumes guardianship of her two younger sisters. She moves into the family's resort, Maggie's Hideaway, to take advantage of the support offered by her father and grandfather. She has a wide variety of friends, one of whom is an elderly man by the name of Zachary. When she goes to visit him one day she finds him dead in his chair. The coroner and the police believe it is a natural death, but TJ is not convinced. When no one else will look into her suspicions she decides to do so herself. Danger soon comes knocking on TJ's door as she checks out the new guest at the resort and a few of the town residents that might have reason to want her old friend silenced.

You will fall in love with TJ and the other residents in the fast moving story. The characters as so well developed you will find it hard to believe they are not real people. The town of Serenity is described to the extent you will be able to envision it in your minds eye. By the time you finish Pumpkins In Paradise you will be wanting to make vacation plans to visit it yourself. Perhaps if you are lucky there may be a vacancy available at Maggie's Hideaway and you can meet TJ while you are there.

This is the first in the Lake Paradise series and as such is a stand alone, but I am already looking forward to opening Snowmen in Paradise to discover what happens to TJ and the town of Serenity next. Remember the name Kathi Daley if you do not know it already. Her talent with the written word will have you adding her to your list of favorite authors very quickly.

Once again I have had the pleasure to read another of Laura's books. We meet up with Theodosia and Drayton at a wine tasting party. All seems to be going well until the son of the host, Jordan Knight, turns up missing. After searching everywhere it is decided to go on with the presentation. As Jordan is giving his speech to workers again to tap a large barrel of wine but it doesn't seem to be working. The wind is to be sampled by the attendees, but instead of only wine the body of Jordan's son is also in the barrel. Theodosia and Drayton once again find themselves right in the middle of another murder case. What an awful way to die drowning in a wine barrel but wait, that's not the cause of death he was also shot. As much as Theodosia prefers to stay out of this case, she is encouraged by Drayton to help solve the murder as Drayton is good friends with Jordan Knight. Theodosia's boyfriend Max also encourages her not to get involved. But we all know Theodosia better than that, with the help of Drayton and Haley, the talented cook and baker, she finds herself pulled into the case.

Laura Childs is one of the most talented authors I have had the pleasure to read. All of Laura's books seem to enchant me in the first chapter. Laura is the author of several series among them, Theodosia and her tea shop, of which this is her 15th book, her scrapbooking mysteries, and the Cackleberry Club mysteries. It is always such a pleasure to meet up with our old friends in each series. There is not much I would rather do than grab a cuppa and sit and visit at the tea shop, then take a stroll down the street to get something to eat at the Cackleberry diner and catch up on the gals there. And after our appetites are satisfied just a short walk down to visit the ladies at the craft store for more scrapbooking supplies. I am sure that everyone has read one of his Laura's books, and if you haven't, now is the time to start.

Publisher's Summary:
A mega-cosy (amateur sleuth) crime novel. Introducing the third in the series of the Lord James Harrington books; a gentle mystery to while away a Sunday afternoon.

Meet Lord James Harrington and his delightful wife, Beth; residents of the tiny village of Cavendish, deep in the heart of West Sussex in England. They adore hosting seasonal events, running their country hotel, keeping the local folklore alive and listening to the latest murder mystery on the wireless. But mysteries don’t always remain on the airwaves.........

It’s summer and the annual tennis tournament between Cavendish and Charnley is under way; but a sudden spate of jewel thefts prompts James to put his sleuthing hat on. His investigation suggests that the criminals are using an ancient smuggling network.
Can he convince his good friend, DCI George Lane, of his suspicions? Are these thefts part of an international operation? Has the smuggling network reopened? Who are the wealthy couple staying at Harrington’s? Are the two cyclists really tourists? Is the murder of the tennis umpire connected? Could a long-term resident really be a criminal mastermind?

James desperately struggles for answers as he explores hidden tunnels, studies old maps and examines the motives of his fellow villagers. Join Lord Harrington, and the Cavendish regulars, in his latest adventure.
Our Review:
I have read the previous two mysteries in this series and The Summer Mystery lives up to the standard set by the previous ones.

Lynn Florkiewicz involves you in both the lives of the villagers and the clues as to the mystery as it evolves. This is a stand alone book as the references to the previous books in no way influence the story line. If you are looking for a great read with well developed and established characters in a setting that anyone would love to live in, then definitely try this series. Add in an ever changing mystery and you have the making of a wonderful afternoon of indulgence.

At less than the price of cup of coffee/tea each they are priced well below their true value, and provide a wonderful afternoon of reading. If you haven't picked up the Lord James Harrington Mysteries yet, pick them up today.

Giveaway: Berkley Prime Crime celebrates 20 Years

Twenty years ago, in March 1994, Berkley Books introduced Berkley Prime Crime, a mass market mystery imprint that included five launch authors.  This year, Berkley celebrates the 20th anniversary of Prime Crime with special author events and promotional giveaways.

In its first year, Berkley Prime Crime (BPC) published approximately forty titles, all mass market.  In 2013, the imprint published 150 titles, including mass market originals, trade paperbacks, and hardcovers.  Every year, BPC launches approximately 25-30 new series, including several house-owned franchises that editors have developed from idea to execution.  In the past year, BPC debuted sixteen titles on the New York Times Bestsellers List (printed and extended lists combined), which comes out to more than one per month!

“When we launched Berkley Prime Crime in March 1994 I believed that the audience for the traditional or ‘cozy’ mystery was still largely underserved and untapped.  Twenty years later I can say without reservation that this has proven to be correct and that Berkley Prime Crime has succeeded beyond my wildest expectations,” said Natalee Rosenstein, Vice President and Senior Executive Editor of Berkley.

This spring Berkley Prime Crime is hosting two events at mystery bookstores that have supported Berkley Prime Crime over the years.  On March 13, Julie Hyzy, Miranda James, and Rebecca Hale will be at Murder by the Book in Houston, Texas.  On March 25 the Poisoned Pen in Phoenix will host Margaret Coel, Carolyn Hart, Earlene Fowler, and Avery Aames.

Throughout the remainder of 2014, more events and promotional giveaways are planned, in addition to Berkley Prime Crime’s annual presence at mystery conventions BoucherCon and Malice Domestic.  You can find out more about Berkley Prime Crime titles and authors at The Crime Scene, our cozy mystery Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thecrimescenebooks.

Gigis Gourmet De-Lite business is taking off where she prepares, and cooks and delivers low calorie meals to the women of Woodstone who wish to shed some pounds. But with an unexpected visit from Gigis sister, Pia, sending Gigi in a tailspin. Pia is soon starting to wear out her welcome as far as Gigi is concerned and soon Pia starts falling head over heals for Bar Owner and sexy Englishman, Delcan McQuaid and Gigi is also harbouring feelings for Delcan. When Delcan asks Gigi to help him in the bars kitchen the night of an engagement party for the son of Woodstones prominent lawyer, Bradley Simpson and his fiancé.

Gigi accepts knowing that it might cause friction between her, her sister and her police detective boyfriend, Mertz. The night of the party, Lawyer, Bradley is found in the parking lot stabbed to death with an ice pick that belonged to Delcan that came from the bar. Determined to clear Delcan of murder Gigi decided to try to find the murderer knowing that Gigis boyfriend Mertz is zeroing in on him for commiting the crime, but the suspect list is not small and narrowing it down is becoming quite the task as it seems everyone has a reason to want this arrogant lawyer dead. Gigi will have to find a killer pronto before her relationship between her and her sister and her boyfriend is put on the back burner for good.

I love this series because of Gigi. When I found this series I knew I wanted to read it because Gigi cooked low calorie meals for her customers and I'm on that weight loss journey also so I could relate to Gigi a lot also trying to live a lifestyle of healthy eating but even as Gigi finds it isn't always easy and it its not easy for me either. So I think that's why I relate to her so much. I think this is the best of the series so far, I really enjoyed it. When I can relate to characters in a book it makes me want to read it much more. I will continue to read every book in this series.
